  15. <p>After the A.B.A. takes some liberal stances, it hears again
  16. from Quayle
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     Historically, the American Bar Association has been a
  19. conservative group led by men in pinstripes and wing tips. But
  20. at this year's annual convention in San Francisco, the lawyers'
  21. group took a distinctly liberal turn. On Sunday, Hillary
  22. Clinton, who until 1991 chaired the A.B.A.'s commission on
  23. women, paid tribute to one of the profession's most recent
  24. female celebrities, Anita Hill. "All women who care about the
  25. equality of opportunity, about integrity and morality in the
  26. workplace, are in Professor Anita Hill's debt," said Clinton,
  27. a corporate lawyer. Hill received an award from the A.B.A. and
  28. a standing ovation from the crowd. Later in the week, the A.B.A.
  29. voted to fight laws that restrict a woman's right to an
  30. abortion; the group also allowed the National Lesbian and Gay
  31. Law Association to join.

  33. <p>     The A.B.A.'s tilt to the left on these issues is
  34. attributable partly to the increasing political clout of women.
  35. In the past 12 years, women have gone from 8% of the legal
  36. profession to 21%. Said the A.B.A.'s outgoing president, Talbot
  37. D'Alemberte: "The future of this profession lies largely with
  38. women, and women care passionately" about abortion. Predictably,
  39. the A.B.A.'s action displeased fellow lawyer Dan Quayle, who won
  40. a good deal of support last year for his more precisely targeted
  41. complaint about exploding legal costs. "The American Bar
  42. leadership," said the Vice President last week, "is just one
  43. more special interest group of the Democratic Party. We now know
  44. why Bill Clinton can never support legal reform."
